"The 10 student-athletes who have been selected to the 2013 Division I Coaches' All-America Team are extremely deserving of this award," said WBCA CEO Beth Bass. "These young women have led their teams to be contenders for conference championships and berths in the NCAA Tournament. Each of these young women is the one on her team who the coach can turn to in order to take the program to the next level."
This is the 39th year of the WBCA Coaches' All-America program, which began in 1975. Once again all 10 members of the team were present to be honored in person during the ceremony. Remarkably, in the 39-year history of the program, none of the 390 Coaches' All-Americans thus far honored have failed to appear for the announcement.
Chelsea Gray. Gray was named to the WBCA Coaches' All-America squad for the first time in her career, after posting one of the best individual seasons in Blue Devil history. The 2013 ACC Co-Player of the Year by a vote of the league's 12 head coaches averaged 13.1 points, 5.6 assists, 5.4 rebounds and 3.7 steals prior to dislocating her kneecap against Wake Forest on Feb. 17. She led the ACC in assists and steals, while ranking in the top five nationally in steals. Gray was named to the All-ACC First Team for the second straight year, while earning All-ACC Defensive team accolades as a junior. She is a finalist for the John R. Wooden Award, USBWA and Naismith National Player of the Year candidate as well. The 5-11 point guard became the first Duke player to notch two triple-doubles as she collected 18 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists at Boston College earlier this season. Her Blue Devil squad advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight, while winning the ACC regular season and tournament titles.
Alyssa Thomas. Thomas is the ACC's Player of the Year for the second straight season and is the first Terrapin to earn the honor twice. She expanded her game to lead the ACC in points, rebounds and assists and with 20 double-doubles. The two-time WBCA Coaches' All-American is the first player in NCAA or WNBA history to average over 15.0 points, 10.0 rebounds or 5.0 assists for a season in over 15 years. Thomas notched two triple-doubles this year and is the first Maryland player - male or female - to notch more than one. She earned the first triple-double in ACC Tournament history with a career-high 32 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists in March.
