ACC Women’s Soccer Players of the Week Announced

Notre Dame’s Jennifer Westendorf and Louisville’s Gabby Kouzelos honored

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Notre Dame sophomore forward Jennifer Westendorf has been named this week’s ACC Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while Louisville red-shirt freshman goalkeeper Gabby Kouzelos is this week’s ACC Defensive Player of the Week.

Westendorf guided Notre Dame to a weekend sweep, picking up critical wins at No. 18 Florida State on Thursday and at Miami on Sunday. Westendorf scored two goals in Notre Dame’s dramatic 4-3 come-from-behind win against the Seminoles with both scores coming in the form of free kicks. Her second goal knotted the score at 3-3 midway through the second period. Westendorf’s four points in the match equals a career high, which she has accomplished three times in two seasons. The Grayson, Georgia, native owns eight goals this season, also marking a single-season career high.

Kouzelos registered two shutouts against a pair of top 15 teams last week.  She helped keep No. 15 Wake Forest scoreless on Thursday, and then held No. 5 North Carolina scoreless for just the second time this season.  She finished with four saves against Wake Forest and five against North Carolina.  Against the Tar Heels, Kouzelos made a diving save with 1:48 left to play in regulation as Jessie Scarpa had a one-on-one chance in the box.

No. 2 Duke and No. 3 North Carolina remain in the top five of this week’s Soccer America rankings and lead a contingent of seven ACC teams ranked in the Top 25, the most of any league. The other five teams in this week’s poll are No. 11 Virginia, No. 16 Wake Forest, No. 17 Florida State, No. 23 Clemson and No. 24 Notre Dame. The United Soccer Coaches will announce its poll later this afternoon.

All 14 ACC teams will complete the regular season on Thursday, Oct. 26. Seeds for the 2017 ACC Women’s Soccer Championship will be announced Thursday evening following the outcome of those games. The top four seeds will host quarterfinal games on Sunday.
