GREENSBORO, N.C. – Notre Dame’s Jon Gallagher has been named ACC Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while Virginia’s Sergi Nus was tabbed as Defensive Player of the Week.
Gallagher played a crucial role in both victories for No. 9 Notre Dame last week, scoring a pair of goals (one game-winner) and adding a game-winning assist to lead the Irish to wins over Northwestern and at No. 5 Clemson. With less than two minutes remaining in the first overtime period last Tuesday against Northwestern, Gallagher broke a 1-1 deadlock by heading home the game-winning goal at 98:15 to seal an Irish comeback victory. Against Clemson, the senior forward from Dundalk, Ireland, scored early in the second half to give Notre Dame a 1-0 lead, and then assisted on the game-winning goal on a free kick with less than two minutes in regulation. Gallagher’s eight goals on the season is tied for the lead in the ACC.
A junior defender from Barcelona, Spain, Nus scored the game-winning goal against Boston College on Friday night in Charlottesville. The game-deciding goal in the 15th minute off a set piece was his fifth of the season, and his third game winner which is tied for second most in the league. In addition to his contribution on offense, he anchored a back line that pitched its third shutout of the season against the Eagles and played all 96 minutes on Monday night in an overtime win over Portland and all 90 in Friday night’s ACC win.
