North Carolina’s Janelle Bailey earns third Rookie of the Week honor

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Notre Dame junior forward Jessica Shepard has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, while North Carolina freshman forward Janelle Bailey earned ACC Rookie of the Week honors, as announced Monday afternoon by the conference office and voted upon by the Blue Ribbon Panel.

Shepard scored a career-high 39 points on a career best 17 made field goals (17-of-22) in Notre Dame’s 91-82 victory over DePaul. Her 39 points broke the Purcell Pavilion women’s scoring record and marked the fourth highest individual scoring performance in Notre Dame history, while her 17 made field goals are tied for the second most in program history. Notably, 26 of her 39 points came in the first half.  The Fremont, Nebraska, native also added 11 rebounds for a team-leading fourth double-double of the season.

Bailey scored 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting, and grabbed seven rebounds during a 90-78 victory over Washington on Sunday in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The ACC Rookie of the Week honor is Bailey’s third of the season.

The ACC’s four teams in the AP Top 25 are holding strong again this week as Notre Dame and Louisville are ranked No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Florida State moved to No. 13 and Duke is No. 14 again this week. Syracuse continues to receive votes in the poll.
