Virginia’s Taylor Ziemer and Laurel Ivory, and Wake Forest’s Maddie Huster collect honors
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia sophomore forward Taylor Ziemer and Wake Forest senior midfielder Maddie Huster share this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week honors, while Virginia freshman goalkeeper Laurel Ivory is this week’s ACC Defensive Player of the Week.
Ziemer was critical to the success of the Cavaliers in 2-0 week as she totaled three points on a goal and an assist. She began the week with the first strike in a 2-1 double overtime win at No. 1/2 West Virginia. She followed that up with an assist on the game-winning goal against Liberty on Sunday.
Huster also tallied three points on a goal and an assist for the week as she played a role in two of Wake Forest’s three goals in a 3-2 upset win over No. 3/6 South Carolina. She converted a penalty kick in the third minute and added an assist in the 51st minute when the Deacs tied the score 2-2 before Hannah Betfort scored the eventual game winner.
Ivory started and played all 195:15 in net for the Cavaliers in a pair of wins last week. She made three saves in the upset road win at West Virginia on Thursday, including a critical save on a free kick just outside the box in the first overtime that kept the Cavaliers alive before Virginia scored the golden goal. She then posted her second clean sheet of the season in the Cavaliers’ 2-0 win over Liberty on Sunday.
The Cavaliers moved up to No. 4 in the latest Soccer America poll released Tuesday mornings, while Wake Forest made a big jump into the poll debuting at No. 8. Including No. 4 Virginia and No. 8 Wake Forest, eight ACC teams are ranked in Soccer America’s Top 25 – No. 9 Florida State, No. 12 North Carolina, No. 13. Duke, No. 15. Clemson, No. 23 Notre Dame, No. 25 NC State.
