ACC Announces Indoor Track & Field Performers of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Florida State’s Andre Ewers, Clemson’s Rebekah Smith, Georgia Tech’s Jeanine Williams, Virginia’s Jordan Scott and Duke’s Madison Heath have been selected as Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Track and Field Performers of the Week for January 23.

The ACC Indoor Track and Field Performers of the Week for week two of the 2017-18 season at a glance:

ACC Men’s Track Performer of the Week
Andre Ewers, Florida State
The junior’s debut with the Seminoles could not have gone much better. Ewers, a Lauderhill, Florida native and transfer from Butler (Kansas) Community College, raced to victory in the 60-meter dash final in 6.52 – the No. 2 time in the world this year and fastest time collegiately. In the process of racking up facility and meet records, and claiming the Larry Wieczorek Invitational Track MVP award, Ewers also equaled the FSU school record of 6.52 set by Dentarius Locke in his 2014 NCAA Indoor Championships victory. He came into the meet with a lifetime-best of 6.65, which he established in a runner-up finish at the 2017 NJCAA National Championships, and promptly lowered that when he ran 6.63 for the fastest qualifying time on Saturday.

ACC Women’s Track Performer of the Week
Rebekah Smith, Clemson
Smith ran an ACC-best 7.26 to win the 60m dash prelim last Friday at the Clemson Invitational.  The Irmo, South Carolina sophomore sprinter voluntarily bowed out of the finals round after achieving a career best in the event. Smith’s time currently ranks fourth in the NCAA and stands third on Clemson’s all-time list.

ACC Women’s Track Co-Performer of the Week
Jeanine Williams, Georgia Tech
Williams was recognized as an ACC Track Co-Performer of the Week for the second week in a row after she destroyed her previous personal-best – set just last week – with a second-place, 8.02 time in the 60m hurdles at the Clemson Invitational. The junior’s time once again tops the ACC, is the third-fastest in the country and is also the tied-sixth fastest time in the world. Her last two times put her alone at the top, as she is the only Jamaican to register any time in the top 40 in the world. Williams was only bested by two one-hundredths of a second in the championship heat.

ACC Men’s Field Performer of the Week
Jordan Scott, Virginia
Seeing his first action of the Indoor season, Scott posted the nation’s seventh-best mark in the triple jump at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational, registering a mark of 15.75m (51-8.25) with a short approach. The Cavalier sophomore from Portmore, Jamaica currently leads the ACC in his event.

ACC Women’s Field Performer of the Week
Madison Heath, Duke
Heath finished in second place in the pole vault at the Clemson Invitational, matching the ninth best mark in the NCAA this season at 13-10 (4.22m). Heath, who currently ranks fourth nationally in a strong women’s pole vault field that includes Lisa Gunnarsson and Rachel Baxter of Virginia Tech, and Duke teammate Laura Marty, placed second among 16 competitors in last weekend’s event.
