2017 All-ACC Academic Cross Country Teams Announced

Georgia Tech’s Solomon, Syracuse’s Stoner named Scholar-Athletes of the Year

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Twenty-eight All-Atlantic Coast Conference performers, including three All-Americans, secured spots on the 2017 All-ACC Academic Cross Country teams as announced today by the conference office.

Georgia Tech’s Nahom Solomon is the ACC Men’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while Syracuse’s Paige Stoner claimed ACC Women’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors. The two seniors both earned All-America honors last fall and head up the All-ACC Academic Teams.

The Yellow Jackets’ Solomon posted a fourth-place finish with an 8k time of 23:21.2 at the ACC Championships on Oct. 27, then followed up three weeks later by placing 22nd in the NCAA finals with a 10k time of 29:44.36.

A Dean’s List computer engineering major from Snellville, Georgia, Solomon became the first Georgia Tech student-athlete since Kevin Graham in 1994 to earn All-America honors in men’s cross country. His 10k time at the NCAA Championships was a career-best and the fastest by a Yellow Jacket runner since Graham’s NCAA finals effort 23 years earlier.

Solomon, one of three ACC men to earn NCAA All-America cross country honors in 2017, also earned All-NCAA South Region honors and led the Yellow Jackets in every meet in which he competed his final two collegiate seasons. With Solomon out front, Georgia Tech posted three top-five team finishes last fall.

The Orange’s Stoner made school history on two fronts last fall. The Pottsville, Pennsylvania, native posted the highest ever finish by a Syracuse runner in the NCAA Women’s Cross Country Championships with her 17th-place 6k time of 19:52. That followed an ACC Championship performance in which she also posted a winning time of 19:52 on the same Sawyer Park course in Louisville. Stoner became the first Syracuse woman to claim a cross country championship in any conference and is the second women’s All-American in program history.

A selected studies in education major who has earned a place on both the AD Honor Roll and Dean’s List at Syracuse, Stoner’s banner cross country senior year also included a runner-up finish at the NCAA Northeast Regional and regular-season recognition as the ACC Women’s Performer of the Week on Sept. 13.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September of 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their careers, as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.

Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.

The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
