GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – North Carolina holds the top seed for the 2018 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Soccer Championship, which gets underway on Sunday, Oct. 28, with quarterfinal matches at four campus sites.
The Tar Heels (15-2-1, 10-0-0 ACC) will play host to eighth-seeded Virginia Tech (9-6-3, 5-5-0 ACC) in quarterfinal action Sunday. North Carolina earned its 22nd regular season title and first outright since 2010 following a 1-0 win over Wake Forest on Thursday. It marked the Tar Heels’ first unbeaten and untied season in ACC play since 2006.
Other Sunday matchups include No. 2 seed Duke (14-2-2, 8-1-1 ACC) hosting No. 7 Florida State (12-4-2, 5-4-1 ACC), No. 3 Virginia (14-3-0, 7-3-0 ACC) at home against No. 6 Louisville (12-5-0, 6-4-0 ACC), and No. 4 Boston College (14-3-1, 6-3-1 ACC), playing host to No. 5 Clemson (11-7-0, 6-4-0 ACC).
With Clemson and Louisville both owning 18 points on a 6-4-0 ACC mark, and since the Tigers and the Cardinals did not play this season, the tie was broken by goal differential in overall conference games. Clemson had the edge and clinched the No. 5 seed with a plus-six goal differential.
All of Sunday’s quarterfinal matches will kick off at 1 p.m. The winners advance to Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina, for semifinals on Friday, Nov. 2 at 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. The championship game will take place on Sunday, Nov. 4 at noon.
As has been the norm, the 2018 ACC Women’s Soccer Championship is packed with elite teams. Five of the eight teams in this year’s tournament field are ranked in both the United Soccer Coaches and Soccer America polls.
ACC Network Extra will carry the quarterfinals on Sunday and the semifinals on Friday. The ACC title game will be televised on ESPNU.
