GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – ACC regular-season champion and top-ranked North Carolina earned all four major individual awards and placed six student-athletes on the 2018 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey teams announced on Wednesday.
Headlining the All-ACC Team are Tar Heel forward Erin Matson, who was named the ACC Offensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year, and teammate Ashley Hoffman, the ACC Defensive Player of the Year. North Carolina’s Karen Shelton garnered ACC Coach of the Year accolades.
The All-ACC Team and the four individual awards are decided by a vote of the league’s seven head coaches.
A freshman forward from Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, Matson currently ranks second in the ACC in points per game (2.18), third in shots per game (3.24) and tied for fourth in goals per game (0.71). Matson is the second Tar Heel to earn ACC Offensive Player of the Year honors and the eighth to be accorded freshman honors. She also leads North Carolina in all three statistical categories.
In earning the Defensive Player of the Year award for the second straight year, Hoffman was a key contributor for the Tar Heels on both ends of the field. In becoming the eighth player from UNC to earn league defensive player of the year recognition, the senior midfielder/back from Mohnton, Pennsylvania, is currently tied for fourth in the ACC in goals per game (0.71), fifth in points per game (1.82) and 10th in assists per game (0.41).
In being named ACC Coach of the Year for 10th time, Shelton has guided her undefeated Tar Heels to a 17-0 overall record, the ACC regular season title and the No. 1 seed in this week’s ACC Championship with a 6-0 mark in league play. In 38 seasons in Chapel Hill, Shelton has compiled a 663-164-9 mark that includes six NCAA Championships, 11 NCAA runner-up finishes, 22 final fours and 36 winning seasons.
Syracuse’s Roos Weers earned her fourth career All-ACC honor and is the 15th player in the 36-year history of ACC field hockey to be a four-time honoree.
Five other players earned their third career All-ACC recognition: North Carolina’s Eva van’t Hoog and Malin Evert, Wake Forest’s Jule Grashoff, Boston College’s Frederique Haverhals and Louisville’s Ayeisha McFerran.
All seven of the league’s teams are represented on the All-ACC squads, led by six student-athletes from North Carolina.
