GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Clemson sophomore forward Mariana Speckmaier has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while Miami redshirt senior goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce earns ACC Defensive Player of the Week honors. These are the final weekly awards of the season.
Speckmaier scored a pair of game-winning goals in a 2-0 week for Clemson. She netted the first goal in a 3-0 shutout of Syracuse in both teams’ regular season finale and the decisive goal in a 1-0 upset of No. 19 Boston College in the ACC Championship Quarterfinals. Her goal against the Eagles to propel the Tigers to the tournament semifinals came in the 19th minute. Speckmaier was on the receiving end of a cross from teammate Sam Staab where she finished with a header past BC keeper Alexis Bryant. It was her league-leading sixth game-winning goal of the season.
Closing out her collegiate career in dominant fashion, Phallon Tullis-Joyce did everything in her power to go out with a win against in-state rival and ninth-ranked Florida State. The redshirt senior made seven incredible saves, including a diving save with 10 seconds remaining in regulation, to secure her 14th career shutout victory. The seven saves also set a new career-high, with 85 on the season, the most in the conference at the end of regular season action.
The ACC Women’s Soccer Championship semifinals are set for Friday with No. 1 seed North Carolina and No. 5 seed Clemson meeting in the first game at 5:30 p.m., and No. 3 seed Virginia facing No. 7 seed Florida State in the second semifinal set for approximately 8 p.m. at Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina. Friday’s winners will play on Sunday at noon for the ACC title and the league’s automatic berth in the NCAA Championship.
