Clemson Championship Game Player Quotes

Tre Lamar, Linebacker
On how much it meant to get back on field after sitting out last week:
“It was definitely difficult for me not playing. Being out there with my teammates, especially in a rivalry game like that, I just knew I had to get myself healthy for this game and I felt like we went out there as a defense and played well so I was definitely happy to get back out there.”

On watching defense bounce back from last week’s performance:
“It was awesome. We did a lot of film stud. A lot of great practices. We got a lot of good looks at practice. Scout team did a great job so I felt like we really went out here focused and ready to do our job.”

On setting the tone early in the game:
“I would say so. I would say the offense really started it. Travis [Etienne] breaking off that huge run really gave us some juice going out there on the field and we wanted to keep the ball rolling in that first quarter and really let people know that we came out here not just to slop around.”

On teammates making personal sacrifices to come back:
“Coach Swinney always says you do it for the people who came before you. When these people have their blood, sweat and tears on this field and they come back and they fight for another opportunity to make this because this is an opportunity you get often. You just got to respect those guys and really fight for them every day because this is their last shot at it and they came back for this opportunity.”

Dexter Lawrence, DT
On whether he has a preference on playing in Dallas or Miami
“Not really. I mean it can go either way. We could not even be in it, honestly. I mean you’re fortunate to play anywhere so if we’re a part of the college playoff championship – most likely we will be – then everybody will just love wherever we go.”

On playing out in the mud
“Oh good, good. It’ll take you to the backyards. We were talking about it on the sideline. It’s just fun sliding around, getting dirty, getting muddy. Just like you get off the school bus and you get your school clothes dirty or something like that and your mom gets mad at you. So it was pretty cool.”

On difference between playing against South Carolina’s passing game and Pittsburgh’s rushing game
“Oh man. This is more my type of game. You know, you just kind of got to prepare for whatever a team brings to you. It definitely was a bloodier-nose type of team and we knew that coming into the game, going into the week that we were going to have to prepare like no other and take all the good-on-good periods in practice real hard.”

On what it meant to win the title with players who chose to return for another year
“That’s what they came back for. They felt like they didn’t accomplish everything they wanted to accomplish with the team so I mean just the daily grind that we all put in from just a team standpoint, not just a unit, it’s just amazing. Just to be where we are right now, 13-0, is just great.”

Trevor Lawrence, QB
On envisioning a season like this
“We’ve had goals set out from the beginning of the season. This is one thing I envisioned coming here is to win championships. Obviously we want to win more than the ACC Championship but this is part of the goals and part of the journey.”

On difficulty of season
Like I’ve said before I am just really proud of the team. We have been really resilient. We’ve been through a lot of bumps in the road and it has just been cool to see everybody fight past that and grow together.

On weather’s impact on the passing game
“Sometimes. We did a good job of taking care of the ball. But in a game like that it is going to affect you a little bit. But I think we did a good job with it and managed it well. We didn’t have any turnovers so that was big.”

On the flea-flicker
“We worked on it this week and we knew it was going to be wide open. We barely got it off, they had a guy blitzing, but it was awesome.”

On if Clemson is looking forward to the College Football Playoff yet
“We are not there yet. We are just enjoying this one and obviously we have a little bit of time before that. Tomorrow we will see more of if we get in, where we are going, all that stuff. We will worry about that a little bit later we are going to enjoy this one.”

On the run game and pass game working together
“I feel like we have a good balanced attack. When one is not working we go to the other and mix it up. We were really balanced so it was good. It is good to have games like this.

On passing game not getting in rhythm
“I missed a few throws throughout the game. It was two or three throws so that didn’t help us really. They did a good stuff in coverages and sometimes the defense is going to get us. They did a good job, game planned us really well.”

A.J. Terrell CB
On four straight ACC Championships…
“We are really excited. It’s my second win as a team, but we just made history today. I’m excited.”

On getting back on the right side of things after a difficult week…
“The takeaway was big. It gave us a lot of momentum and it affected the team in a good way. We came out victorious.”

On difficulty of playing conditions…
“It was really wet; we had to get tackled a lot but there really wasn’t anything to it except to just do it. It was really fun out there, just tackling and things like that. The conditions were bad but we held our own. They only had a few passing yards.”

“As a whole, our defense stood up to the task.”
