GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia Tech junior guard Taylor Emery has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, while North Carolina freshman forward Janelle Bailey and Boston College freshman guard Milan Bolden-Morris share ACC Rookie of the Week honors, as announced Monday afternoon by the conference office and voted upon by the Blue Ribbon Panel.
Emery averaged 28.5 points in a 1-1 week for the Hokies. The junior from Tampa, Florida, led Tech with 25 points in a 90-74 win at North Carolina, where the she knocked down three 3s and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line down the stretch. She also dished out a career-high six assists in the win.
In Sunday’s narrow 64-62 loss to rival Virginia, Emery set a new Virginia Tech ACC record at Cassell Coliseum, scoring 32 points to bring the Hokies back from a 23-point deficit. Emery scored the first 15 points of the fourth quarter, a run which cut the Cavaliers’ lead to just three points.
Bolden-Morris scored a career-high 20 points, including five 3-pointers at Georgia Tech, while sparking a second-half comeback that fell short with 14 points. In the Eagles’ win over Pittsburgh on Sunday, Bolden-Morris had 15 points, including a three at the end of the third quarter and another early in the second half that helped the Eagles pull away. Bolden-Morris averaged 17.5 points for the week, and shot 50 percent from the floor and from beyond the arc.
Bailey averaged 16.5 points and 11.5 rebounds last week, registering a pair of double-doubles for the Tar Heels. She scored 18 points and 13 rebounds against Virginia Tech and contributed 13 points and 10 rebounds at NC State.
The ACC Rookie of the Week nods are Bailey’s sixth and Bolden-Morris’ third of the season.
Five ACC teams are ranked in this week’s AP Top 25, including No. 4 Louisville, No. 5 Notre Dame, No. 12 Florida State, No. 17 Duke and No. 25 NC State. Miami is receiving votes in the poll.
The fourth-ranked Cardinals take on No. 1 Connecticut tonight at 7 p.m. on ESPN2.
