GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Wake Forest junior forward Elisa Penna has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, while Georgia Tech freshman guard Kierra Fletcher is this week’s ACC Rookie of the Week, as announced Monday afternoon by the conference office and voted upon by the Blue Ribbon Panel.
Penna had a career day against No. 25 NC State, recording a career-high 34 points on a career-best 11 made field goals and nine made 3-pointers. The nine made 3-pointers match a Wake Forest single-game record and match the most made by any ACC player this year. Her 34 points are tied for the 10th-most in Wake Forest single-game history and are tied for eighth-most by an ACC player this year. It was the most points scored by a Wake Forest player since Dearica Hamby scored 36 against Boston College on Feb. 12, 2015. The effort followed a 20-point performance in an ACC victory over Virginia Tech. For the week, Penna averaged 27 points per game while shooting 55.6 percent from the field and 64.7 percent from long distance.
Fletcher recorded a career-high 18 points and nine rebounds in the Yellow Jackets’ 79-61 win over North Carolina. The freshman dominated in the second half against the Tar Heels, shooting 4-of-7 from the field and 4-of-7 at the charity stripe to post 12 points in the final two quarters, along with five rebounds. The Warren, Michigan, native has scored in double-figures in each of the last three games and in eight games overall.
Five ACC teams are ranked in this week’s AP Top 25, including No. 4 Louisville, No. 5 Notre Dame, No. 9 Florida State, No. 20 Duke and No. 21 NC State. Miami and Syracuse are receiving votes in the poll.
Two conference games are set for tonight. The ninth-ranked Seminoles travel to Durham to play No. 20 Duke at 6 p.m. on ESPN2, while Pitt hosts Syracuse at 7 p.m. on the ACC’s Regional Sports Networks.
