GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Duke redshirt senior guard Lexie Brown has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, while North Carolina freshman forward Janelle Bailey is the ACC Rookie of the Week, as announced Monday afternoon by the conference office and voted upon by the Blue Ribbon Panel.
Brown averaged 26.0 points, 7.0 assists, 4.5 steals and 3.5 rebounds while helping Duke to a 2-0 week, including an upset victory over ninth-ranked Florida State and a senior day win over rival North Carolina. She notched 30 points, five steals, three rebounds and three assists against the Seminoles. Her 30 points were the most by a Blue Devil against a top-10 opponent in school history. Brown hit 12-of-19 field goals and 4-of-8 three-pointers as she played the entire 40 minutes and had only one turnover. To close out the regular season against the Tar Heels, Brown notched 22 points, a season-high 11 assists, four steals and four rebounds. For the week, Brown hit 54.1 percent of her field goal attempts and had only four turnovers in 77 minutes of play. On the week, Brown went over the 2,000-point mark for her career, while also becoming only the third Duke player to notch 100 steals in a season. Brown is also the only active Division I player with over 2,000 points, 200 three-pointers, 500 assists and 300 steals in her career.
North Carolina’s Bailey averaged 18.5 points and 12.0 rebounds last week, registering double-doubles against a pair of top-25 teams. Bailey scored 25 points and grabbed 12 rebounds against RV/24 Syracuse and had 12 points and another 12 rebounds at No. 20/16 Duke.
Bailey has recorded a double-double in six of the last eight games. This is her seventh ACC Rookie of the Week honor of the season.
Five ACC teams finished the regular season ranked among the AP Top 25, including No. 4 Louisville, No. 5 Notre Dame, No. 11 Florida State, No. 18 Duke and No. 23 NC State. Miami and Syracuse are receiving votes in the poll.
The 41st annual ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament will be played this Wednesday (Feb. 28) through Sunday (March 4).The tournament will feature all 15 ACC teams and 14 games, beginning with three first-round matchups on Wednesday. Four second-round games are scheduled for Thursday, followed by the quarterfinals on Friday, the semifinals on Saturday and the championship game on Sunday at 2 p.m.
