GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Following a season-opening win over No. 17 Air Force, Duke senior attackman Justin Guterding earns the first Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week honor of the season, while teammate sophomore close defenseman JT Giles-Harris is the ACC Defensive Player of the Week.
Guterding turned in one of his finest statistical performances of his career, tallying three goals and seven assists to lead Duke to an 18-4 season-opening victory over No. 17 Air Force. His seven assists were a career high, while his 10 points matched his previous career-best outing. Both the assists and points totals were one shy of matching the Duke single-game records. The Garden City, New York, native had a hand in Duke’s first four goals and in five of the eight in the first half. He tacked on two more goals and three assists in the second half, and did not play in the final 10 minutes of the game. Guterding is one assist shy of becoming the sixth Duke player to register 100 career goals and 100 career assists in his career.
Guterding was also named to the USILA National Team of the Week.
Giles-Harris helped anchor a defense that allowed just four goals to the 17th-ranked Falcons in 60 minutes. Giles-Harris collected two ground balls and two caused turnovers as he and the Duke defense limited Air Force to just 26 shots for the game and only 11 in the first half. Duke kept Air Force off the scoreboard in the first and third quarters and held the Falcons without a goal for the first 16:17, and then scoreless for another 19:22 from the end of the second quarter through early in the fourth quarter.
Duke and North Carolina are back in action this week, while Notre Dame, Syracuse and Virginia open their seasons this weekend.
