GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – NC State’s Will Wilson has been voted the ACC Baseball Player of the Week, while Wake Forest’s Griffin Roberts was selected as Pitcher of the Week.
ACC weekly honors are determined by a vote of a select media panel. This is the second ACC Pitcher of the Week honor this season for Roberts and first Player of the Week recognition for Wilson.
Wilson turned in a stellar week at the plate to lead No. 20 NC State to a perfect 5-0 week, highlighted by the program’s first-ever three-game sweep at No. 9 Clemson. In the five games, he hit .545 with 12 hits, seven runs and five runs driven in, and had five extra-base hits with a slugging percentage of .955 and an on-base percentage of .600. He recorded more than one hit in each game of the week and extended a streak of reaching base safely to 36 consecutive games.
The sophomore shortstop from Kings Mountain, North Carolina, finished the series against the Tigers with a .500 batting average and tallied a series-high six hits. On Sunday, Wilson recorded his first career multi-home run game, giving NC State a 1-0 lead with a solo shot in the first and a go-ahead homer in the eighth that proved the difference in a 5-4 Wolfpack win.
Roberts recorded a career-high 13 strikeouts in 8.1 innings pitched – the longest outing of his career – in Wake Forest’s 2-1 win over No. 11 Louisville on Friday. The junior from Midlothian, Virginia, has struck out 10-or-more batters in four straight outings after starting the year with a nine-strikeout effort. He leads the ACC in strikeouts and innings pitched after serving as a reliever his first two seasons.
