Duke's Lexie Brown Named Kay Yow Award Winner

All-ACC Academic Women’s Basketball Team named

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Duke redshirt senior guard Lexie Brown has been named the recipient of the 10th annual Kay Yow Scholar Athlete of the Year Award for the second consecutive year and headlines the 2017-18 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Basketball Academic Team.

The ACC women’s basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year award is named in memory of the legendary Yow, who won 737 games as a head coach while directing NC State to four ACC Tournament championships and the 1988 U.S. Olympic Team to a gold medal.  Yow, who passed away in January of 2009, is also remembered for her leadership and courage in her fight against breast cancer.

“Lexie is the consummate student-athlete,” said Duke head coach Joanne P. McCallie. “She takes great pride in her work on and off the court. Her passion for learning is so impressive and refreshing. She has thrived as a student-athlete at Duke in all ways.”

A first-team All-ACC selection and the ACC Defensive Player of the Year, Brown enters play in this week’s ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament at the Greensboro Coliseum tied for first among league scorers at 20.3 points per game. The Suwanee, Georgia, native leads the conference in steals with 3.6 per game. She ranks sixth among conference players in assists per game (4.4) and fifth in free-throw percentage (.826).

A 2018 Nancy Lieberman Award finalist, Brown is the only Power Five Conference player to have over 100 steals, 100 assists and 100 rebounds on the season. Her 28-game streak with at least one three-pointer currently ranks second nationally.

A 2018 Senior CLASS Award finalist, Brown received a degree in sociology along with a markets and management certificate from Duke in May of 2017. She is now enrolled in the prestigious MMS Program at the Duke Fuqua School of Business.

Along with Brown, the All-ACC Academic Team includes five players that were named to the first or second All-ACC Team and two members of the All-ACC Freshman Team and All-Defensive Team.

Notably, Duke’s Rebecca Greenwell earned her fourth All-ACC Academic Team honor, while Danielle Edwards (Clemson), Brown (Duke), Emese Hof (Miami), and Regan Magarity (Virginia Tech) collected the third of their careers. Chatrice White (Florida State), Francesca Pan (Georgia Tech), Gabby Cooper (Syracuse), Lauren Moses (Virginia) Jocelyn Willoughby (Virginia), Elisa Penna (Wake Forest) and Alex Sharp (Wake Forest) picked up their second.

ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters. The award is based 60 percent on academic achievement and 40 percent on athletic accomplishment.

Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.

The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
