Virginia Tech’s Ciaetti, UNC’s Greene recognized as sport’s Scholar-Athletes of the Year
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – NCAA champions Vincent Ciattei of Virginia Tech and Nicole Greene of North Carolina have been recognized as the 2018 Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athletes of the Year and lead the sport’s All-ACC Academic Team announced on Thursday.
Ciattei took home the silver medal in the men’s mile with a school-record and personal-best time of 3:58.36, and then won gold as a part of the distance medley relay team that finished with a time of 9:30.76 at the NCAA Championships.
Ciattei, a redshirt senior from Baltimore, also won the mile at the ACC Indoor Championships with a time of 4:03.08 and ran a personal-best time of 8:10.91 in the 3,000 meters.
An engineering sciences and mechanics major, Ciattei is an eight-time honoree on the Virginia Tech Dean’s List. He has been named to the AD Honor Roll for five straight years and the ACC Academic Honor Roll for four years.
Ciattei was one of 52 individuals recently honored as a recipient of the 2018 Weaver-James-Corrigan Postgraduate Scholarship, which is awarded annually to graduating ACC student-athletes who have performed with distinction in both the classroom and their respective sport, while demonstrating exemplary conduct in the community.
North Carolina’s Greene won the ACC’s only women’s national title at this year’s NCAA Indoor Championships when she prevailed in the highly-competitive high jump on March 9.
After achieving personal bests of 6-2 (1.88m) three times during the indoor season, Greene nearly reached that height again with her effort of 6-1.5 (1.87m) at the NCAA finals. That earned the Tar Heel junior a spot in a championship jump off, which went an unprecedented seven rounds before Greene emerged as the gold medalist and became the program’s first national champion since 2007.
The NCAA title followed Greene’s gold medal at the ACC Championships, where the Ponte Vedra, Florida, native matched her career-best mark and just missed on an attempt to clear what would have been an ACC-record 6-3.25 (1.91m). Greene was voted the 2018 ACC Women’s Indoor Field Performer of the Year by the league’s head coaches.
Greene is a three-time Dean’s List student and serves as the women’s track and field representative on UNC’s Student-Athlete Advisory Council. She was recognized as a 2017-18 Tar Heel Scholar Athlete. During her first three years as an undergraduate, she has been named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team, the All-ACC Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Academic Teams, and the ACC Academic Honor Roll.
A 2018 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars Semifinalist, Greene is on a pre-med track and recently gained admission to the UNC School of Medicine’s Medical Education Development (MED) Program. The exercise and sport science major is a member of the Alpha Epsilon Delta Pre-Health Honor Society.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
Every member of the 2018 All-ACC Indoor Track and Field Academic Teams also earned All-America and/or All-ACC honors during the most recent season. In addition to Greene and Ciattei, selections to this year’s teams include the 2017-18 USTFCCCA Southeast Regional and ACC Men’s Field Performer of the Year (NC State’s Josh Davis), the ACC Women’s Track Performer of the Year (NC State’s Elly Henes), both ACC Freshmen of the Year (Florida State’s Trey Cunningham and Virginia Tech’s Lisa Gunnarsson), the ACC Championship Women’s Track MVP (Florida State’s Ka’Tia Seymour) and the USTFCCCA Southeast Region Men’s Track Athlete of the Year (Virginia Tech’s Neil Gourley).
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes each conference student-athlete with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
