This week’s top ACC track and field performers at a glance:
ACC Men’s Track Performer of the Week
Justyn Knight, Syracuse
Knight set a new school record and ACC record while posting the seventh-fastest 1500-meter time in NCAA history at the Bryan Clay Invitational. Knight crossed the line in 3:36.07, 0.08 seconds behind defending NCAA Champion Josh Kerr. Knight’s time is the second-fastest nationally this outdoor season and leads the way amongst those attempting to qualify for the NCAA East Prelims. Knight bested his own school record from 2016 by three seconds. This marks the first ACC Men’s Performer of the Week mention of the 2018 outdoor season for Knight, who was honored three times (on successive weeks) during the indoor season.
ACC Women’s Track Performer of the Week
Paige Stoner, Syracuse
Stoner set a new school record, while posting a win in the 3000-meter steeplechase at the Virginia Challenge. The senior’s time of 9:57.20 marks the sixth fastest time in the NCAA this season, and second amongst schools qualifying for the NCAA East Prelims. Stoner’s mark bested her own school record from a season ago by six seconds.
ACC Men’s Field Performer of the Week
Corion Knight, Florida State
For the second consecutive weekend, Knight was a double-winner, capturing both the long jump and the high jump titles over huge fields at the Bryan Clay Invitational. Knight’s outdoor lifetime-best in the long jump (7.85 meters/25-9.25) was good enough to beat teammate Kenneth Fisher (7.75m) as the Noles finished 1-2 against a field of 74 competitors. Making Knight’s fifth-round winning leap even more impressive was the fact it came moments after he locked up the high jump title with a clearance of 2.16 meters (7-1), and narrowly missed eclipsing his week-old personal best (2.20m). The two events were contested simultaneously at Azusa Pacific’s Cougar Stadium. Knight ranks 17
th nationally in the long jump and 15th nationally in the high jump.
ACC Women’s Field Performer of the Week
Bridget Guy, Virginia
Guy set a Lannigan Field, Virginia Challenge and school record in the pole vault with her mark of 4.46 meters (14-7.5). The Greensburg, Pennsylvania, redshirt junior cleared the height with her first attempt and topped her previous personal best of 4.30m (14-1.25). Guy’s latest mark ranks fourth in the NCAA and second in the ACC. She has now been recognized twice this outdoor season as ACC Women’s Field Performer of the Week after being first named on March 20.
