North Carolina’s William Blumberg named Player of the Year
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – North Carolina’s William Blumberg has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Year and headlines the 2018 All-ACC Team.
The honors, announced Thursday, were determined by a vote of the leagues head coaches.
Fellow Tar Heel Benjamin Sigouin was named the Freshman of the Year, and Florida State head coach Dwayne Hultquist was named Coach of the Year.
Blumberg, the 2017 NCAA singles runner-up, secured the No. 2 seed in this year’s NCAA Singles Championship as the ACC’s automatic qualifier. The Greenwich, Connecticut, native has been ranked as high as No. 1 nationally in the Oracle/ITA Rankings this season in both singles and doubles, and has compiled an 18-3 record in dual matches, including a 15-2 mark against ranked opponents.
Playing primarily at the No. 2 singles spot, Sigouin also received a bid for the NCAA Singles Championship. A native of Vancouver, Canada, Sigouin has been ranked as high as No. 29 in the nation in singles, and boasts a 16-3 mark in dual matches, including a 7-3 record against ranked opponents.
Hultquist has guided Florida State to a 27-4 record. The 27 wins are the second-most in program history, behind only the 1984 team’s 31. The Seminoles knocked off No. 1 Wake Forest at home on March 25 and secured the No. 3 seed in the ACC Championship. Florida State earned the No. 12 seed in the NCAA Tournament and will host first- and second-round matches in Tallahassee as a top-16 seed.
