Wake Forest’s Petros Chrysochos named Scholar-Athlete of the Year
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Wake Forest’s Petros Chrysochos has been named the 2018 Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year and highlights the 2018 All-ACC Academic Men’s Tennis Team as announced by the league office on Monday.
The junior Deacon from Larnaca, Cyprus, posted a 3.934 GPA this spring, and a 3.532 GPA this past fall while studying communication. Chrysochos helped Wake Forest to its first ever NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championship, as the Deacons won on their home court this past spring.
Chrysochos won the 2018 NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Singles Championship, the first ever for Wake Forest, defeating teammate Borna Gojo in the final. Wake Forest also won its first ever ITA Indoor National Championship this past season, and secured its second ACC Men’s Tennis Championship. Chrysochos was named to the All-Tournament Team in both singles and doubles in the NCAA Championship, named Most Outstanding Player and was named to the All-Tournament Team at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship.
Chrysochos won the ITA National Fall Championships doubles title with partner Skander Mansouri, was an ITA All-American in singles, and went 44-4 on the year in singles play, a school record for single season victories. Chrysochos finished the year on a 30-match winning streak and only suffered one defeat during the spring season. He finished the year ranked third nationally in singles.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September of 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their careers, as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
