GREENSBORO, N.C. (TheACC.com) – Boston College junior attacker Sam Apuzzo has been named the 2018 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year and headlines the All-ACC Academic Women’s Lacrosse Team, as announced Tuesday.
Apuzzo, who was the 2018 Tewaaraton Award honoree, led Boston College to an undefeated regular season (17-0) and a berth in the NCAA Championship title game for the second straight season. The Eagles finished the season 22-2 overall and set a school record for wins in a season.
Apuzzo was named the ACC's Attacker of the Year and All-ACC First Team while leading BC to the undefeated regular season. She was named a IWLCA Northeast Regional First Team honoree.
A native of Babylon, New York, Apuzzo led the team in goals (88), assists (41), points (129), draw controls (163), caused turnovers (31) and game-winning goals (9). She was third in the nation in scoring and points scored, while leading the ACC in both categories.
Apuzzo set a new program record for most goals in a single season (88), topping the record she set in 2017. She also set a new program record for points (129) in a single season and tied the program record for most assists with 41. Apuzzo shattered BC’s single season draw controls record with 163.
All eight of the league’s women’s lacrosse programs are represented on the All-ACC Academic Team, which includes 10 student-athletes that earned IWLCA All-America honors in 2018. Twenty-six members of the ACC All-Academic Team were named to the All-ACC Team.
Included on the team are two selections that earned their fourth All-ACC Academic Team honor – Duke’s Kyra Harney and Virginia’s Rachel Vander Kolk, and two that earned recognition for the third straight year (Duke’s Maddie Crutchfield and North Carolina’s Marie McCool).
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
