GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) –Wake Forest sophomore midfielder Omir Fernandez has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while Virginia redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Colin Shutler is this week’s ACC Defensive Player of the Week.
Fernandez earns his second straight ACC Offensive Player of the Week honor after scoring a goal in back-to-back games to help keep Wake Forest’s perfect record intact. The midfielder from the Bronx scored both game winners in the Deacs’ victories over Georgia Southern (2-0) and at No. 16 Virginia Tech, 2-1. Fernandez has scored at least one goal in each of the last four games, totaling five goals in that span.
Shutler produced his third shutout of the season as the Cavaliers earned a 1-0 win over Marshall. Against the Thundering Herd, Shutler directed a backline that allowed seven shots for the game and only one on goal – a quality opportunity late in the second half. Shutler leads the ACC in goals against average (.225) and save percentage (.947).
ACC men’s soccer teams will play non-conference matches on Monday and Tuesday before a full slate of league matches on Friday.
