GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) - Boston College’s Frederique Haverhals has been named the 2018 Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year and leads the sport’s All-ACC Academic Team, as announced Friday by the conference office.
A senior from Warmond, The Netherlands, majoring in Finance, Haverhals was named to the NFHCA All-America First Team, the All-ACC First Team, and the first Eagle since 2008 to earn All-Region honors each year of her career. A two-time team captain, Haverhals led the team this past season in goals (9), game-winning goals (3), shots (61) and points (22).
Haverhals, North Carolina’s Malin Evert, and Wake Forest’s Megan Anderson and Juliane Grashoff were named to the All-ACC Academic team for the fourth times in their careers.
Boston College’s Lucy Lytle, Duke’s Margaux Paolino and Samantha Steele, North Carolina’s Ashley Hoffman and Virginia’s Carrera Lucas each earned their third career league academic accolades.
Ten players on the All-ACC Academic Team were named All-Americans this past season, while an all-time high 18 were voted All-ACC.
All seven ACC field hockey programs are represented on the All-ACC Academic Team, led by national champion North Carolina with eight players.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September of 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their careers, as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
