GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – The Atlantic Coast Conference today recognized the following student-athletes as ACC Cross Country Performers of the Week for October 2.
ACC Men’s Co-Performer of the Week – CJ Ambrosio, Duke, Jr., Avon, Ohio
For the second consecutive meet, Ambrosio led the Blue Devils with a third-place 8K finish at the Roy Griak Invitational last Saturday morning in St. Paul, Minnesota, on the Les Bolstad Golf Course at the University of Minnesota. Ambrosio ran a time of 24:48.1 as Duke earned first place with 34 team points.
ACC Men’s Co-Performer of the Week – Ari Klau, Virginia, Sr., West Hartford, Conn.
Klau led the Cavaliers to a first-place team finish at the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invite. UVA’s team score of 35 points was the second-best in program history for the No. 22 Cavaliers at the event. Klau led five Virginia runners that finished less than six-and a-half seconds apart, as he recorded a fourth-place individual finish with an 8K time of 24:14.2.
ACC Women’s Performer of the Week – Erin Phelps, Florida State, So., Tallahassee, Fla.
Phelps scored the first cross country victory of her running career, leading the Seminoles to victory at the UAH Charger Open. In the first collegiate event contested at the former Huntsville Municipal Golf Course, Phelps laid down the fastest 5000-meter cross country time of her career (17:50.51) by nearly 20 seconds. She pulled away from the pack over the final mile for a 21-second margin of victory over teammate Yasmine Abbes, despite the temperature rising into the mid-80s, leading a group of young Noles competing for spots on the ACC Championships roster.
ACC Men’s Freshman of the Week – Zach Kinne, Duke, Fr., Sewickley, Pa.
Kinne recorded a 10th-place finish to help the Blue Devils to the team title at the Roy Griak Invitational. Kinne was the first freshman among the 14-team field to finish the 8k race with a time of 25:04.4.
ACC Women’s Freshman of the Week – Yasmine Abbes, Florida State, Fr., Nijmegen, Netherlands
In just the second 5K race of her career, Abbes finished second at the UAH Charger Open, helping the No. 19 Seminoles to the team title. Abbes, one of the top youth/junior middle distance runners in the world, covered the 5000-meter course in 18:11.73; a significant improvement over her 19:21.9 FSU debut at the 5.2k Covered Bridge Open. Prior to the 17-year-old’s arrival in Tallahassee, the Dutch standout had never competed in a race longer than 3000 meters.
