GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – The Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Golf Championship will be played at four prestigious golf clubs from 2021-24, the league announced Wednesday following approval at the conference’s fall meetings.
The following clubs will host the championship from 2021-24:
2021 – Capital City Club, Crabapple Golf Course (Atlanta, Georgia)
2022 – The Clubs by JOE, Shark’s Tooth Golf Club (Panama City Beach, Florida)
2023 – The Country Club of North Carolina, Dogwood Course (Pinehurst, North Carolina)
2024 – Charlotte Country Club (Charlotte, North Carolina)
Chartered in 1883, Capital City Club is one of the oldest private clubs in the South. Designed by renowned golf course architect Tom Fazio, the Crabapple Course was constructed in 2002, and upon completion, the course immediately hosted the PGA Tour’s 2003 American Express World Golf Championship. Crabapple has also hosted the following notable events: the 2010 NCAA Men’s Golf Regional Championship, the AJGA’s 2012 Rolex Tournament of Champions, the 2013 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship and 2017 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship. The Crabapple Course is the only venue in the United States to have hosted an NCAA Division I National Championship, a World Golf Championship and a USGA Championship.
Shark’s Tooth Golf Club is the centerpiece of the coastal community Wild Heron in Panama City Beach, Florida, and will play host to the 2022 ACC Men’s Golf Championship. Greg Norman designed the over-7,200-yard course, which runs along the shores of Florida’s largest dune lake, through pine forests and over protected wetlands. Golf Digest recently named Shark's Tooth one of the top golf courses in the state of Florida. The ACC Championship was last held in Florida in 2001 in Lake Buena Vista.
The 2023 championship will be contested at the Dogwood Course at The Country Club of North Carolina (CCNC), which was originally designed by Ellis Maples and Willard Byrd, and is considered one of the state’s top five courses. The course was renovated in 2016 by Kris Spence, one of the nation’s rising stars in golf course architecture. CCNC has a long history of hosting elite golf championships, including the U.S. Amateur (1980), the U.S. Girls and Boys Junior Championships, the Southern Amateur and North Carolina Amateur.
Charlotte Country Club, host of the 2024 championship, features an 18-hole Donald Ross golf course that was restored by architect Ron Prichard and was awarded the 2009 Best Remodel of the Year by Golf Digest. The course is ranked No. 63 in GolfWeek's 2012 Classic Courses. The club has hosted four USGA championships: 1972 U.S. Men's Amateur, 2000 U.S. Senior Men's Amateur, 2010 U.S. Women's Amateur, and the 2018 USGA U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship.
Old North State Club in New London, North Carolina has hosted the ACC Men’s Golf Championship 22 of the last 24 years and will do so again in 2020 (April 17-20). Designed by Tom Fazio, Old North State Club is one of state’s top-ranked courses by the North Carolina Golf Panel.
Format Change Starting in 2020
The format for the men’s golf championship will change this year to a combination of stroke and match play competition. Fifty-four holes of stroke play will be played Friday, April 17 (36 holes) and Saturday, April 18 (18 holes). The top four teams from stroke play will compete in match play semifinals on Sunday, April 19 (18 holes) with the winners advancing to the match play finals on Monday, April 20 (18 holes). The format change was made to more closely mirror the NCAA Championship.
