GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia senior forward Meghan McCool has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while Pitt junior goalkeeper Amaia Pena has been tabbed ACC Defensive Player of the Week.
McCool scored the game-winning goal for the top-ranked Cavaliers in a 3-0 victory against Notre Dame on Sunday. It marked her 10th goal of the season and fourth game-winner. The senior from Glenside, Pennsylvania, took a pass from teammate Courtney Petersen, stepped around a defender and found the back of the net to open the scoring for Virginia on Senior Day.
Her 10 goals this year are a career high and surpass last season’s total of nine, which tied for the team lead. The win helped the Cavaliers remain undefeated on the season, and it was their sixth consecutive shutout in ACC play.
Pena came up huge for the Panthers numerous times in Saturday’s match, recording a career-high 11 saves in a 2-1 win against NC State. With the Panthers clinging to the lead and the field tilted with the Wolfpack putting on constant pressure, she made nine saves in the second half to prevent NC State from rallying to tie the game.
The Portugalete, Spain, native made four saves in a span of five minutes at one point during the second half as NC State looked to find the equalizer. Her 11 saves are tied for the most by an ACC goalkeeper this season, along with Virginia Tech’s Mandy McGlynn.
