• The Atlantic Coast Conference kicks off the 2019 Fall Championship schedule on Friday, November 1, with the ACC Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships in Blacksburg, Virginia. The men’s 8k final opens the competition at Virginia Tech’s Buford Meredith Cross Country Course at 10:01 a.m., followed by the women’s 6k championship at 11:01. The action will be carried live via ACC Network Extra, and live results will be available via theACC.com.
• This marks the second year that the ACC Cross Country Championships have been held at Virginia Tech. The venue first hosted the event in 2012, with the host Hokie men and the Florida State women claiming team titles.
• The Notre Dame men and NC State women enter this year’s event as reigning champions. The Fighting Irish men halted Syracuse’s bid for a sixth-straight ACC title last year in Boston, and head coach Sean Carlson’s troops will be bidding to start a streak of their own. Coach Laurie Henes’ NC State women will be going after their fourth straight ACC crown.
• The ACC boasts two women’s teams among the USTFCCCA top 10 rankings following strong showings in a pair of national meets the weekend of Oct. 18-19. NC State moved up to No. 6 in the nation following a third-place finish at the Nuttycombe Invitational in Wisconsin. Florida State is No. 10 after placing fifth in the Pre-Nationals at Terre Haute, Indiana. No. 17 Notre Dame, No. 22 Virginia Tech and No. 27 Boston College give the ACC four nationally ranked teams on the women’s side.
• Six ACC men’s teams are ranked, led by No. 20 Notre Dame. Florida State is No. 21, NC State and Virginia are tied at No. 23, Virginia Tech is No. 26 and Syracuse is No. 28.
• Men’s runners to watch include 2018 ACC champion Peter Seufer of Virginia Tech, defending his title on his home course. Wake Forest’s Zach Facioni and Notre Dame’s Yared Nuguse – last year’s second- and third-place ACC finishers – also return for their respective teams. Florida State graduate transfer Kasey Knevelbaard is a two-time ACC Runner of the Week and posted an ACC-leading 15th-place finish at the Pre-Nationals on Oct. 19.
• Two of the top three ACC finishers from 2018 return on the women's side. NC State's Elly Henes, who earned the silver medal in ACC Championships last season, placed 14th at Nuttycombe Invitational on Oct. 18. Notre Dame's Anna Rohre, the 2016 ACC champion and 2018 ACC bronze medalist, was the league's top finisher at last year's NCAAs and led all ACC runners at the Nuttycombe Invitational with a 10th-place finish. The 11th-place finish by Florida State's Elizabeth Funderburk at the Pre-Nationals led All-ACC runners.
• The top 21 men's and women's finishers at the ACC Championships will earn All-ACC recognition. The first true freshman to cross the finish line in the men's and women's races will be recognized as ACC Freshman of the Year. ACC Runners of the Year and Coaches of the Year will be determined by a vote of the league's head coaches following next month's NCAA Championships and will be announced on Tuesday, Dec. 10.
• NC State leads all schools with a total of 40 ACC cross country championships – 16 men's and 24 women's. Veteran head coach Rollie Geiger – who is slated for USTFCCCA Hall of Fame induction in December – owns 34 team titles (15 men's, 19 women's) to rank as the all-time leader. Laurie Henes has coached NC State to four women's team championships, including the last three in sucession.
• North Carolina ranks second among ACC men's programs with nine team titles. Florida State's women claimed team championships seven successive seasons from 2007 through 2013.
• NCAA Regional action is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 15,and Terre Haute, Indiana, will play host to the 2019 NCAA Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Nov. 23.
• ACC Network will air an hour-long program featuring a recap, interviews and highlight footage of the 2019 ACC Cross Championships on Thursday, Nov. 7, at 9 p.m.
