GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia senior forward Meghan McCool has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while North Carolina defender Emily Fox has been tabbed ACC Defensive Player of the Week.
McCool scored three goals on the week to lead the top-ranked Cavaliers to a 2-0 record, as Virginia remained one of two undefeated teams in the nation. She scored the game-winner against No. 12 Louisville as part of a brace to help UVA move to 6-0-1 this season against nationally-ranked teams.
It was the third straight match that McCool notched the game-winning goal and it was her fifth game-winning goal of the season with four in ACC play. The Glenside, Pennsylvania, native scored the opening goal of the match against Boston College in a 6-1 win for the Cavaliers.
McCool has now scored in 12-of-17 matches this season and is tied for the team and ACC lead in goals scored (13).
Fox played all but 12 minutes in the midfield during North Carolina's 2-0 week, helping the Tar Heels secure the 2019 ACC regular season championship. She played all 90 minutes in the shutout of No. 5 Florida State in a matchup of the 2018 NCAA National Championship.
Hailing from Ashburn, Virginia, Fox then played 78 minutes in the 2-0 win over Virginia Tech on Sunday. The Tar Heels did not allow a shot on goal against the 25th-ranked Hokies.
Fox has been a key cog in a UNC defensive effort which has allowed only one goal in nine ACC matches totaling 830 minutes of game action.
ACC women’s soccer regular season action concludes Thursday night with all 14 teams in action.
The 2019 ACC Championship starts this weekend, as the top-eight teams will qualify for the event with the quarterfinals at campus sites on Nov. 3. The semifinals and final will be held at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C., on Friday, Nov. 8 and Sunday, Nov. 10, respectively.
