GREENSBORO, N.C. (TheACC.com) – Boston College freshman forward Stefan Sigurdarson has been selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while BC senior defender Joe Kellett and Virginia senior defender Robin Afamefuna have been chosen as the Co-Defensive Players of the Week.
A native of Kopavogur, Iceland, Sigurdarson scored both of Boston College’s goals on Friday as the Eagles upset No. 3 Wake Forest, 2-1. He gave BC a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute on a great one-on-one move to free himself. After beating a Wake defender, Sigurdarson ripped a shot from eight yards out to the far corner for a 1-0 lead. He then gave BC its final lead in the 84th minute on a left-footed shot off a pass from fellow rookie Mike Suski.
Hailing from Norfolk, Massachusetts, Kellett was a key factor in BC’s matches last week. Typically a midfielder, Kellett has moved to defense because of BC injuries. He played a pivotal role as he led the Eagles’ defense in a scoreless draw against Merrimack on Tuesday. On Friday, Kellett was active and played all 90 minutes as the Eagles upset No. 3 Wake Forest, 2-1.
Afamefuna helped the top-ranked Cavaliers to a pair of clean sheets last week. The Wuerselen, Germany, native was credited with the game-winning goal against George Washington on Tuesday, a beautifully crafted set piece that landed him the top spot on SportsCenter's Top-10. From his defensive position, he helped the Cavaliers to their NCAA-best eighth and ninth shutouts of the season. The Cavalier back line has not conceded a goal in the last 627 minutes and has pitched six-straight shutouts, the most since 2009.
The ACC men’s soccer slate resumes Monday, with Pitt entertaining Howard. There are five non-conference matches slated for Tuesday, including No. 3 Wake Forest taking on High Point on ACC Network. Five conference matches are on the docket Friday, while No. 20 North Carolina plays host to Syracuse at 1 p.m. Saturday on ACC Network.
