Virginia’s Willoughby, VT’s Kitley Earn First ACC Women’s Basketball Weekly Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia senior guard Jocelyn Willoughby has been named the first Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the 2019-20 season, and Virginia Tech center Elizabeth Kitley earned ACC Freshman of the Week.

ACC women’s basketball weekly awards are voted on by the league’s Blue Ribbon Panel.

Willoughby turned in a stellar debut in her senior season, as she scored a career-high 31 points to lead the Cavaliers to an 84-60 win against Bucknell, a 2019 NCAA Tournament team. The East Orange, New Jersey, native was 9-for-15 from the floor and was 10-for-11 from the free throw line.

It was the first 30-point game for a Virginia player since 2010 and is the most points by an ACC player in a game this year.

She also grabbed 11 rebounds to turn in a double-double performance. Additionally, Willoughby was 3-for-3 from the 3-point land. Against a strong USC team on Sunday, Willoughby contributed 10 points to finish the weekend with 41 points on 13-of-20 shooting.

Kitley set the Virginia Tech program record for most points in a freshman debut with 27 in the Hokies’ 105-41 win against Saint Francis. She was 13-for-15, shooting .867 from the field. Her 27 points were the second most for a Hokie in their collegiate debut.

Hailing from Summerfield, North Carolina, Kitley had eight points in the win over George Mason to go along with eight rebounds. For the week, she averaged 17.5 points per game with 6.5 rebounds per game.

ACC women’s basketball action returns Monday night as North Carolina hosts Navy at 7 p.m. in the first women’s basketball game on ACC Network. Pitt hosts Central Connecticut State at 7 p.m., and Notre Dame welcomes Tennessee for a 7 p.m. matchup on ESPN2.
