GREENSBORO, N.C. (TheACC.com) – Clemson earned four season awards to highlight the 2019 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Team, which was released Wednesday following a vote by the league’s 12 head coaches.
Clemson junior forward Robbie Robinson was named the ACC Offensive Player of the Year, while teammates Malick Mbaye and Philip Mayaka earned Defensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year laurels, respectively. Clemson head coach Mike Noonan was named ACC Coach of the Year for the first time.
Virginia junior Joe Bell earned ACC Midfielder of the Year honors.
Clemson and Virginia, currently ranked No. 1 and 2 in the nation this week with identical 15-1-1 records, led all teams with seven All-ACC honorees apiece. The Tigers boasted a league-high four first-team selections. Seventh-ranked Wake Forest placed five on the All-ACC Team.
Four of the ACC’s first-team honorees also earned the distinction in 2018: Daniele Proch (Duke), Mauricio Pineda (North Carolina), Edward Kizza (Pitt) and Bruno Lapa (Wake Forest).
Robinson leads the ACC and ranks fifth nationally with 15 goals this season and is tied for the conference lead and sixth nationally with nine assists. He twice this season has been named the ACC Player of the Week.
Mbaye leads Clemson in minutes played this season (1,530) and has played a major role in the Tigers' nine shutout performances. The lone senior on Clemson’s back line, Mbaye has helped the Tigers allow their fewest goals (15) since 1998. He also has scored three goals.
Bell has scored three goals and assisted on four others for the Cavaliers. He also has played a vital role in UVa’s stout defense that has allowed just six goals, which is tied for the fewest nationally this season. Bell is UVa’s first ACC award winner since Tony Tchani earned Freshman of the Year honors in 2008.
Mayaka has scored a pair of goals and also owns eight assists this season. He is tied for fourth in the ACC in assists. Both of his goals were game-winning scores.
