NC State’s Hayden Hidlay Named ACC Wrestler of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – NC State 157-pound junior Hayden Hidlay picked up his second Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week honor this season after his major decision victory keyed the No. 6 Wolfpack to a 24-12 dual win at Appalachian State.

Ranked No. 2 nationally at 157 pounds, Hidlay squared off against Appalachian State’s No. 20 Matt Zavistoski with their teams deadlocked at 3-3. Hidlay responded with a 16-3 major decision that gave NC State the team lead for good.

Leading 7-2 to start the third period, Hidlay scored his third takedown of the bout, followed by a four-point and then a two-point near fall. The two-point near fall was Hidlay’s second of the match.

Hidlay, who hails from Lewiston, Pennsylvania, found much more breathing room versus Zavistoski than when the two met on Nov. 17 at the Wolfpack Club Open. Zavistoski ranked as high as No. 17 nationally by FloWrestling, pushed Hidlay to the near finish before the Wolfpack All-American prevailed by a 3-2 score on a late takedown.

Hidlay is now 4-0 following an in-season loss, outscoring those foes by a combined 55-13 with three bonus-point wins.
