Louisville’s Evans, Notre Dame’s Peoples Earn ACC Women’s Basketball Weekly Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Louisville junior guard Dana Evans has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week, and Notre Dame’s Anaya Peoples is the ACC Freshman of the Week.

ACC women’s basketball weekly awards are voted on by the league’s Blue Ribbon Panel.

Evans was named Paradise Jam MVP after leading Louisville to wins over three teams that entered the week undefeated, including a 72-62 win over No. 1 Oregon. She finished the week averaging a tournament-best 21.3 points, while shooting 47 percent from the floor and 11-of-21 (.524) from 3-point range. She was 17-of-18 (.944) from the free throw line and averaged 4.3 assists.

The Gary, Indiana, native had 19 points and was perfect from the free throw line in the win over UT Arlington. She followed that with a career-high 28 points, including 6-of-9 shooting from 3-point range, while adding five assists in the win over Oklahoma State. Evans finished the week with 17 points and six assists, knocking down a crucial 3-pointer in the final minutes, to help the Cardinals secure the win against top-ranked Oregon.

Peoples averaged 17.3 points per game for the Fighting Irish last week and was named to the Cancun Challenge All-Tournament Team. She tallied a career-high 19 points against FGCU and pulled down a career-best nine rebounds.

Hailing from Danville, Illinois, Peoples charted 15 points against South Dakota State and 18 points in Notre Dame’s 67-51 win versus No. 21 USF. She logged eight or more rebounds in all three games, averaging 8.7 rebounds per game to end the week with 26 total.

Peoples was 20-of-32 from the floor, connecting on 62.5 percent of her shots.

ACC women’s basketball action returns this week with the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, as five games will be played Wednesday, and nine games will be held Thursday. Last year’s Challenge was among the most competitive in the event’s history, with the ACC edging the Big Ten, 8-6. The title was the ninth in league history for the ACC, which owns a 9-0-3 advantage in the Challenge.
