Florida State’s Gillespie, Pitt’s Brown Earn ACC Women’s Basketball Weekly Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Florida State senior forward Kiah Gillespie has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, and Pitt’s Amber Brown is the ACC Freshman of the Week.

ACC women’s basketball weekly awards are voted on by the league’s Blue Ribbon Panel.

Gillespie turned in another stellar week to lead the Seminoles to a pair of wins, including a 78-68 victory against No. 19 Michigan State in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. She nearly averaged a double-double for the second consecutive week, contributing 20.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game.

The Naismith and Wooden Award Preseason Watch List selection scored 24 points and added 12 rebounds in the win against the Spartans, recording her 17th career double-double and fourth of the season. Hailing from Meriden, Connecticut, Gillespie notched 17 points and seven rebounds in Florida State’s ACC opener at Clemson on Sunday.

Gillespie shot nearly 50 percent from the floor (11-for-23) and beyond the arc (6-for-13) for the week.

Brown continued her strong play for the Panthers, averaging a double-double in a pair of non-conference games with 15.5 points and 10.0 rebounds per game. She notched her fourth double-double of the season and second consecutive against Penn State last Thursday, as she netted 16 points and 12 rebounds, highlighted by seven offensive boards.

On Sunday, Brown scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds versus Stony Brook. The freshman currently ranks second in the ACC in double-doubles (4) and ranks second in the NCAA among freshmen in double-doubles. In the last five games, the Monroe, Louisiana, native has averaged a team-high 14.6 points and 7.8 rebounds while shooting 47.4% from the floor.

ACC women’s basketball action returns on Wednesday night, as Notre Dame hosts No. 16 DePaul at 6:30 p.m. on ACC Network. Most league teams are idle this week due to final exams, but seven league teams are in action on Sunday, December 15.
