GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Several of college track and field’s most prestigious meets highlighted last weekend’s schedule, and six Atlantic Coast Conference student-athletes have been recognized for their standout performances.
Florida State’s Andre Ewers and NC State’s Cravont Charleston earned ACC Men’s Track Co-Performer of the Week accolades, while NC State’s Nell Crosby was named the Women’s Track Performer of the Week.
Virginia’s Hilmar Jonsson is the ACC Men’s Field Performer of the Week for the second time during the Outdoor season. Florida State’s Shanice Love and Virginia Tech’s Rachel Baxter shared ACC Women’s Field Performer of the Week honors.
FSU’s Ewers ran 10.22 (+0.1) in the 100-meter dash at the Tom Jones Memorial Saturday at Florida’s Percy Beard Track to win his heat and place seventh overall on time in a field of 55 competitors. It was the fastest season-opening 100-meter dash of Ewers career and the fastest wind-legal time among collegians at the meet. Earlier in the day, the Lauderhill, Florida, native anchored the Seminoles’ 4x100 relay team to a season-best time of 39.14 for a second-place finish. That time ranks No. 7 in the NCAA this season and leads the ACC.
NC State’s Charleston posted top-five finishes in three of the events in which he competed at the Tom Jones Invitational and among the top 10 in all four events. The Charlotte, North Carolina, junior helped the Wolfpack’s 4x100 relay ream to its fastest time of the season (39.83), and had individual times of 10.17 in the 100 meters and 20.91 in the 200.
Virginia’s Jonsson set an Icelandic, Lannigan Field and UVA record in the hammer throw on Saturday at the Virginia Grand Prix. On his last throw of the night, Jonsson delivered the second-best throw in the NCAA with a mark of 75.26m (246-11). His performance topped the previous Icelandic record mark of 74.48m (244-4) from 2008 in addition to shattering the school and facility marks. Jonsson topped his own Virginia school record five times during the series and led through all six rounds of competition. His longest throw ranks 13th in the world for the 2019 outdoor season.
FSU’s Love successfully defended her women’s championship section discus title at the 125
th Penn Relays with a winning mark of 58.25 meters (191-1), despite competing in a driving rain. With the No. 3 mark in meet history, Love delivered the Noles their fourth consecutive discus title – their fifth in six years - at the nation’s oldest track & field competition. All five of her legal throws eclipsed the top mark of the meet runner-up. Love, who currently ranks No. 3 nationally, has won discus titles in four of five meets this season. Her season-best of 61.54m leads her closest ACC competitor by more than five meters and nearly 17-feet.
Competing in the women’s pole vault at the Lenny Lyles-Clark Wood Invitational at Louisville, the Hokies’ Baxter jumped 4.50 meters (14-9) to set a personal best and tie for second in all time in Virginia Tech school history. The effort by the Orange County, California, sophomore tied for the best vault of anyone in the nation last weekend and also stands tied for the best mark in the East this outdoor season.
NC State’s Crosby registered a second-place finish in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase at Penn Relays. The Colorado Springs senior’s time of 10:04.39 stands as the second-fastest in school history as the ninth-fastest time in the nation this season. Crosby has earned silver-medal honors in both 3000m steeplechase races in which she has competed this season.
