GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – For the second consecutive season, Boston College’s Sam Apuzzo has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year and headlines the All-ACC Academic Women’s Lacrosse Team announced on Thursday.
Apuzzo, the ACC and Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Attacker of the Year, led the Eagles to the NCAA Championship game for the third straight season. The Babylon, New York, native scored a program-record 94 goals to lead the nation in her senior campaign, topping her previous record of 88.
Additionally, she contributed 30 assists to finish the year second nationally with 124 points behind teammate Kenzie Kent. Apuzzo was also a finalist for the 2019 Tewaaraton Award after winning the honor as a junior. She is a three-time All-ACC and All-ACC Academic Team selection.
All eight of the league’s women’s lacrosse programs are represented on the All-ACC Academic Team, which includes nine student-athletes that earned IWLCA All-America honors this season.
Nineteen members of the All-ACC Academic Team were also named to the All-ACC Team.
In addition to Apuzzo, four other student-athletes earned the award for the third time in their careers: Boston College’s Dempsey Arsenault, Duke’s Olivia Jenner, Virginia’s Sammy Mueller and Virginia Tech’s Mary Claire Byrne.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career for undergraduate students. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
