GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Miami’s Estela Perez-Somarriba has been named the 2018-19 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year and highlights the All-ACC Academic Women's Tennis Team announced on Friday.
The 2019 NCAA Division I Women’s Singles Champion, Perez-Somarriba is a two-time ACC Player of the Year. The junior from Madrid, Spain, boasts a 3.945 GPA and majors in economics. She is a three-time ITA All-American, three-time All-ACC honoree, three-time All-ACC Academic selection and led the nation in singles wins with 43.
Florida State led all schools with six members on the All-ACC Academic Team, followed by Miami with five and Wake Forest with four. Duke and North Carolina each placed three student-athletes on the team, while Boston College, NC State, Notre Dame, Syracuse, Virginia and Virginia Tech had two on the team and Georgia Tech placed one.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career for undergraduate students. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
