GREENSBORO, N.C. (TheACC.com) – Virginia junior forward Irakoze Donasiyano has been named the first Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for the 2019 season, while Wake Forest junior defender Michael DeShields has been tabbed the ACC Defensive Player of the Week.
Donasiyano scored both of Virginia’s goals in a 2-0 Friday win over Pacific, which advanced to the second round of the 2018 NCAA Tournament. He scored in the 44
th minute and again in the 48
th minute. The multi-goal performance was the first of his career and the first by a Cavalier on the season’s opening night in 10 years.
DeShields played all 180 minutes at center back in Wake Forest’s wins over No. 15 UCF and Creighton. He spearheaded a Demon Deacon defense that yielded just two shots on goal in the two matches, including none in the Sunday win over Creighton. DeShields recorded the primary assist on Kyle Holcomb’s eventual game-winning goal in the Friday victory over UCF.
ACC teams went 15-5-2 during the first five days of the regular season. The ACC’s second week of the season started Monday with each conference team in action picking up a victory, including No. 12 Virginia scoring a 2-0 win over No. 1 Maryland at Audi Field in Washington, D.C.
No. 14 Louisville plays host to No. 8 Kentucky Tuesday evening in the conference’s lone game of the day. Eleven of the league’s 12 teams play non-conference matches on Friday, with No. 10 Duke’s 4 p.m. match against Princeton featured on ACC Network.
