McMaster, Shutler Claim ACC Men’s Soccer Player of Week Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. (TheACC.com) – Wake Forest junior midfielder Justin McMaster and Virginia junior goalkeeper Colin Shutler have been picked as the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively. Shutler earned the defensive award for the second time this season.

A native of Kingston, Jamaica, McMaster played a key role in all three goals as the No. 7 Demon Deacons rallied for a 3-2 overtime win over No. 4 Clemson on Saturday, handing the Tigers their first loss of the season. He recorded the primary assist on the goal which tied the game at 1-1 in the 50th minute and then netted an 85th minute equalizer to send the match into overtime. Early in the first overtime period, McMaster drew a foul in the box which led to the game-winning penalty kick.

A native of Middleburg, Virginia, Shutler helped organize the Virginia defense, as it recorded 1-0 shutouts in a home overtime win over Western Michigan as well as a road victory over No. 20 Notre Dame. With the two victories, the Cavaliers extended their season-opening win streak to eight matches and remain one of four unbeaten and untied teams in the nation. UVA has recorded seven shutouts and allowed just one goal in eight matches this year.

The ACC men’s soccer slate for this week begins Monday, with Pitt playing host to Denver. Nine ACC teams step onto the pitch on Tuesday in non-conference play. The conference schedule reaches its halfway point this weekend. Five matches will be contested on Friday, including No. 20 Notre Dame traveling to NC State in a 6 p.m. match that will air on ACC Network.
