GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Following a perfect 2-0 week in conference action, Virginia senior guard Jocelyn Willoughby has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week and Cavaliers guard Shemera Williams is the ACC Freshman of the Week.
ACC women’s basketball weekly awards are voted on by the league’s Blue Ribbon Panel.
Willoughby, the ACC’s leading scorer, averaged 23.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game to lead Virginia to wins against Duke and Boston College. Against the Blue Devils, she scored a team-high 24 points and helped the Cavaliers erase an eight-point deficit in the final three-and-a-half minutes of the game.
At Boston College on Sunday, she made a season-high 10 field goals, while also contributing to a defensive effort that limited the ACC’s highest scoring team to just 52 points. The East Orange, New Jersey, native ended the contest with 23 points and eight rebounds.
Willoughby leads the league with eight 20-point games and receives ACC Player of the Week honors for the second time this year.
Hailing from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Williams scored nine points and added nine steals in Virginia’s win over Duke. Her nine steals are the most in a single game by an ACC player this season and just one shy of matching the program record for steals in a single game.
On Sunday against the Eagles, she tallied a career-high 17 points and was 6-of-9 from the field and 4-of-5 from the free throw line. For the week, she averaged 13.0 points and 5.0 steals per game, while connecting on 9-of-18 shots from the floor.
Virginia is the first school to sweep the weekly honors this season.
ACC women’s basketball action returns on Thursday, January 16, with a full slate of conference games, including an ACC Network doubleheader as No. 9 NC State hosts No. 13 Florida State at 6 p.m. and Duke welcomes Notre Dame at 8 p.m.
