Duke’s Odom, Virginia’s Williams Earn ACC Women’s Basketball Weekly Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Duke senior guard/forward Leaonna Odom has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, and Virginia guard Shemera Williams is the ACC Freshman of the Week.

ACC women’s basketball weekly awards are voted on by the league’s Blue Ribbon Panel.

Odom averaged 19.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game last week to help lead Duke to a road win at Syracuse and a victory at home against Georgia Tech. At Syracuse on Thursday, she notched her third double-double of the season with 23 points and 10 rebounds, while also recording three assists and two steals. She drained 11-of-14 field goals in the 30-point win for the Blue Devils.

The Lompoc, California, native hit 8-of-11 shots to tally 16 points, six rebounds, three steals and two assists versus Georgia Tech on Sunday. She claims ACC Player of the Week for the first time in her career.

Williams scored a career-high 20 points to lead the Cavaliers in scoring against No. 5 Louisville on Thursday, in just 22 minutes on the court. She fueled Virginia’s second-half comeback, scoring eight points in the third quarter and 12 in the fourth, narrowing a 20-point deficit to 10 points in the third quarter.

Hailing from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Williams helped power the Cavs to a 90-60 victory versus Notre Dame on Sunday, their largest margin of victory and highest scoring output this season. In addition to scoring 15 points, she assisted on six baskets and grabbed six rebounds.

For the week, she averaged 17.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.5 steals per game to earn ACC Freshman of the Week honors for the second time this season.

ACC women’s basketball action returns on Thursday, January 30, with a full slate of conference games, including four televised games. Miami hosts Georgia Tech at 6 p.m. and Syracuse welcomes Virginia Tech at 8 p.m. on ACC Network, while No. 5 Louisville visits Notre Dame at 7 p.m. on ESPN and seventh-ranked NC State travels to Clemson at 7 p.m. on RSN.
