GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Twenty-nine All-Atlantic Coast Conference performers, including six All-Americans, secured spots on the 2019 All-ACC Academic Cross Country teams announced Thursday by the conference office.

Virginia Tech senior Peter Seufer heads up the men’s team as the ACC Men’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while NC State senior Elly Henes earned ACC Women’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year accolades.

Both Seufer and Henes were individual ACC and Southeast Regional champions, and each placed among the top 10 of the NCAA Division I Championships held Nov. 23 at Terre Haute, Indiana.

Seufer, who hails from Lynchburg, Virginia, delivered a stellar performance at the NCAA Championships, leading the men’s 10K field as late as the 8K split and eventually placing fourth at 30:40.1 – just one-tenth of a second shy of the bronze medal. Seufer’s fourth-place finish was the highest in Virginia Tech program history.

Seufer earlier posted a first-place time of 29:20.7 to lead the men’s 10K at the NCAA Southeast Regional in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Nov. 15. He repeated as the gold medalist as the ACC Championships at Blacksburg, Virginia, on Nov. 1, navigating the 8k course in a time of 23:42.7 that placed nearly 39 seconds ahead of the next-closest runner.

Henes, of Cary, North Carolina, entered the 2019 NCAA Cross Country Championships as the 13th multi-year cross country All-American in NC State program history and delivered a career-best 10th-place finish of 20:20.7 on the 6K course.

Earlier, Henes had claimed 2019 ACC and Southeast Regional gold medals with respective winning times of 20:37.4 and 19:48.9. Henes is just the fifth runner in NC State women’s cross country history to earn All-America honors three or more times.

Seufer and Henes were also named the men’s and women’s cross country Southeast Region Athletes of the Year by the USTFCCCA.

In addition to Seufer and Henes, the 2019 All-ACC Academic Cross Country team features two more men’s All-America runners in Notre Dame’s Dylan Jacobs and NC State’s Ian Shanklin, as well as women’s All-Americans Anna Rohrer of Notre Dame and Kelsey Chmiel of NC State. Selections also include both ACC Freshmen of the Year – Duke’s Sam Rivera (men) and Notre Dame’s Maddy Denner (women).

Academic Cross Country team members combined for 14 ACC Performer of the Week honors last season.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September of 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their careers, as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.

Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.

The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
