Notre Dame is the reigning champion on both the men’s and women’s sides. Each squad captured its fourth ACC title in the last five years last season in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. North Carolina owns the most men’s team titles all-time with eight, while Notre Dame holds a league-best four women’s team championships.

Notre Dame is playing host to the ACC Fencing Championships for the second time (2016). The ACC held a men’s fencing championship annually for 10 years from 1971 through 1980 but discontinued it after the 1980 season. With the addition of Notre Dame in 2014-15, the ACC has four fencing programs for both men and women and reinstituted the championship in 2015, also adding the women’s championship.
