Greensboro, N.C. (theACC.com) - For the second time in three years, Virginia is the ACC Women’s Swimming and Diving champion. Powered by 10 event wins, the Cavaliers secured their record-tying 16th ACC title on Saturday night at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
Virginia finished with 1492.5 points, ahead of 2019 ACC Champion NC State (1333) and Louisville (1105.5). North Carolina placed fourth with 839 points, followed by Notre Dame (784), Duke (675.5), Florida State (555), Virginia Tech (469), Georgia Tech (407.5), Pitt (359), Miami (298) and Boston College (164).
The Cavaliers’ Paige Madden was voted Most Valuable Swimmer by the coaches after capturing five gold medals on the week. The junior from Mobile, Alabama, placed first in the 200 free, 500 free and 1650 free, and was on the first place 400 free and 800 free relays.
For the third consecutive year, Florida State’s Molly Carlson was named the Most Valuable Diver. The Seminole senior medaled in all three diving events, winning the 3-meter and platform competitions and placing second on the 1-meter.
NC State’s James Brady was voted the Most Valuable Men’s Diver after qualifying for the finals in all three diving events. The Wolfpack senior won the 3-meter competition, placed fourth on the 1-meter and sixth on the platform.
1650 Freestyle
Paige Madden won the 1650 freestyle, posting an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 15:50.38. NC State’s Makayla Sargent placed second (16:01.36) and fellow Wolfpack swimmer Kate Moore finished in third (16:09.86).
200 Backstroke
Emma Muzzy of NC State captured her second straight ACC title in the 200 backstroke, touching in 1:50.79. She defeated fellow Wolfpack swimmer Katharine Berkoff (1:52.36) and Virginia’s Emma Seiberlich (1:53.13).
100 Freestyle
Virginia’s Morgan Hill took gold in the 100 freestyle, recording a time of 47.47 in the process. She edged out NC State’s Kylee Alons (47.73) and Louisville’s Casey Fanz (47.97) for the title.
200 Breaststroke
For the second straight year, NC State’s Sophie Hansson claimed the 200 breaststroke title. The sophomore posted a time of (2:05:59), out-touching Virginia’s Ella Nelson (2:05.68) and Kate Douglass (2:05.89) for the win.
All three swimmers recorded NCAA ‘A’ cut times in the event.
200 Butterfly
Louisville’s Grace Oglesby (1:53.70) won the 200 butterfly for the third consecutive year and became only the second ACC swimmer to win the event at least three times, joining North Carolina’s four-time winner Melanie Buddemeyer.
Abby Richter of Virginia (1:54.09) and Notre Dame’s Coleen Gillilan (1:54.79) rounded out the podium.
Women’s Platform Finals
Molly Carlson capped off an incredible week at the ACC Championships with a win on the platform, scoring a (297.25). The Seminole senior was followed by Georgia Tech’s Cami Hidalgo (270.45) and Duke’s Ali Watson (267.65).
400 Freestyle Relay
Virginia closed out the 2020 ACC Championships in style, taking gold in the 400 freestyle relay. The team of Kate Douglass, Lexi Cuomo, Paige Madden and Morgan Hill posted a time of 3:10.57.
Louisville took second (3:11.57), followed by NC State (3:13.00). All three schools recorded NCAA automatic qualifying times.
