NC State was crowned the 2020 ACC Men’s Swimming and Diving Champion on Saturday night, its sixth straight ACC title. The Wolfpack totaled 1250 points and earned 13 podium finishes, including seven gold medals.
Virginia placed second with 1089 points, followed by Louisville (1066.5), Virginia Tech (898), Florida State (812.5), Notre Dame (803.5), North Carolina (630.5), Pitt (520), Georgia Tech (506), Duke (421), Miami (197) and Boston College (134).
NC State swept the championship’s most valuable honors. Coleman Stewart was voted the Most Valuable Swimmer after being named Co-Most Valuable Swimmer with Georgia Tech’s Caio Pumputis last year. Stewart won gold in the 100 and 200 backstrokes for the third straight time. The Wolfpack senior also swam on the first-place 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams.
James Brady was voted the Most Valuable Diver after qualifying for the finals in all three diving events. The Wolfpack senior won the 3-meter competition, placed fourth on the 1-meter and sixth on the platform.
Men’s Platform Diving (Feb. 21)
Miami cleaned up the diving portion of the evening by claiming the top four spots on platform.
Placing in first overall was four-time ACC platform champion David Dinsmore with a score of 510.35. Next to him on the podium were teammates Zach Cooper with 434.65 points and Max Flory with 429.15 points.
Miami was the first team to take the top three spots on platform and the only ACC team to sweep a diving podium since 2001.
1650 Freestyle
Notre Dame's Zach Yeadon started the night off with a championship-record time of 14:27.93 in the 1650 freestyle. Fellow Fighting Irish swimmer Jack Hoagland followed in second place (14:35.19) and NC State's Ross Dant came in third (14:37.69).
Yeadon and Hoagland both posted NCAA automatic qualifying times.
200 Backstroke
Coleman Stewart of NC State won the 200 backstroke for the third time, becoming only the seventh ACC swimmer to accomplish the feat and the first since North Carolina's Eric Ericson in 1984. The senior set a new conference record with an NCAA 'A' cut time of 1:37.71.
Louisville's Mitchell Whyte (1:39.46) and Virginia Tech's Samuel Tornqvist (1:40.10) rounded out the podium.
100 Freestyle
NC State continued its winning streak into the 100 freestyle, with Nyles Korstanje taking gold in the event. The sophomore clocked a 42.13, followed by Florida State's Peter Varjasi (42.68) and Louisville's Andrej Barna and North Carolina's Jack Messenger, who both tied for third (42.69).
200 Breaststroke
The Cardinals' Evgenii Somov claimed his second 200 breaststroke gold of his career, after winning his first in 2018, with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:52.54. Virginia's Keefer Barnum placed second (1:52.91) and Virginia Tech's AJ Pouch took third (1:53.69).
200 Butterfly
Louisville's Nicolas Albiero won his third straight 200 butterfly title, becoming only the fifth ACC swimmer to accomplish the feat and the first since North Carolina's Tom Luchsinger in 2013. Albiero set a new meet record with a time of 1:38.65.
Virginia Tech's Blake Manoff took second (1:40.48) and fellow Hokie Antani Ivanov placed third (1:41.01). Both Albiero and Manoff posted NCAA 'A' cut times.
400 Freestyle Relay
NC State closed out the ACC Championships in style, as the team of Stewart, Korstanje, Hunter Tapp and Noah Hensley took gold in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 2:48.03. Louisville (2:50.02) and Florida State (2:50.54) rounded out the podium as all three teams posted NCAA automatic qualifying times.
