Duke’s Gorecki, Notre Dame’s Brunelle Earn ACC Women’s Basketball Players of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Duke graduate student guard Haley Gorecki has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, and Notre Dame forward Sam Brunelle is the ACC Freshman of the Week.

ACC women’s basketball weekly awards are voted on by the league’s Blue Ribbon Panel.

Gorecki averaged 20.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 2.7 steals, as Duke closed the regular season with three road games in seven days. She helped lead the Blue Devils to a 70-65 upset victory at eighth-ranked NC State with 24 points, five assists, four rebounds, two steals and one block on Monday night.

She scored 13 points and dished out five assists at Virginia Tech last Thursday, before concluding the week with another stellar game in a 73-54 win in Sunday’s at North Carolina. The Palatine, Illinois, native tallied a game-high 23 points with nine rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Gorecki became the sixth Blue Devil to reach 500 points in consecutive seasons.

Brunelle led Notre Dame to a perfect 2-0 week, highlighted by a 70-67 road win at 19th-ranked Florida State on Sunday. She averaged 24.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists in a pair of games. Against North Carolina, Brunelle recorded 23 points with nine rebounds in an 83-65 win for the Fighting Irish.

Hailing from Ruckersville, Virginia, she logged one of her best performances of the year in the upset win in Tallahassee, scoring a game-high 25 points on 7-of-11 shooting from 3-point land. Her seven threes made are a career high, tied the freshman single-game record at Notre Dame and tied for second most overall in a game.

Not only did she make nine 3-pointers on the week, she shot 56.3 percent from beyond the arc in the process. Brunelle notched her third 20+ point performance in the last four games and has helped the Irish enter the ACC Tournament on a three-game win streak.
