GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Clemson senior defender Oskar Ågren was chosen as the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Men’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year and leads the All-ACC Academic Men’s Soccer Team, announced Thursday by the league office.
A native of Malmö, Sweden, Ågren was a finalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy and was a First-Team All-ACC and United Soccer Coaches Second-Team All-America honoree during the 2021 season. A team captain, he led Clemson to its first national championship since 1987. He anchored a Clemson defense that recorded 10 clean sheets in 23 matches and added five goals, including two penalty kicks in the NCAA Tournament shootout victories against top-seeded Oregon State and No. 4 seed Notre Dame.
An economics major, Ågren was named to the All-ACC Academic Team for the third straight season. His Clemson teammate Charlie Asensio was selected to the squad for the fourth straight year. Clemson’s George Marks, Pitt’s Jackson Walti, Syracuse’s Hilli Goldhar and Virginia’s Andreas Ueland also were selected to the team for the third time in their careers.
Following the season, Ågren was selected in the first round (13th overall) of the 2022 MLS SuperDraft by the San Jose Earthquakes. Thirteen of the ACC’s 2022 MLS SuperDraft selections are featured on the All-ACC Academic Team, including four first-round selections: Ågren, Duke’s Thor Ulfarsson and Notre Dame’s Mohamed Omar and Philip Quinton.
The ACC’s four season award winners from the 2021 season are all featured on the All-ACC Academic Team: Ulfarsson (Offensive Player of the Year), Duke’s Peter Stroud (Midfielder of the Year), Pitt’s Jasper Löeffelsend (Defensive Player of the Year) and Duke’s Shakur Mohammed (Freshman of the Year). Eighteen members of the 2021 All-ACC Team are represented on the All-ACC Academic Team, as are seven members of the All-Freshman Team.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career for undergraduate students. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
