ACC Indoor Championships Set for Decisive Day 3

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (theACC.com) – Friday’s Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship schedule centered mostly on the running prelims, but champions were crowned in four field events.

Pitt’s Felix Wolter became the first competitor in meet history to win the men’s heptathlon three times and set a new ACC Championship scoring record for the event in the process.

Wolter finished with 6,059 total points after placing first in the 60 meters, 60-meter hurdles, high jump and long jump. The Panther grad student from Munich, Germany topped the former record of 5,987 set by Duke’s Curtis Beach in 2014. Wolter came within eight points of Beach’s mark while winning last year’s event in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Finals were also held in the women’s high jump, as well as both the men’s and women’s long jump.

Florida State’s Jeremiah Davis, who entered the men’s long jump as this year’s world leader, continued his season-long form by taking the gold medal as the only competitor to exceed eight meters. Davis went for 8.02 meters (26-3.75) on his second attempt of the evening and remained atop the field for the final four rounds.

The women’s high jump saw Georgia Tech sophomore Shanty Papakosta eclipse her former personal best by a sizeable margin as she took the gold medal with a mark of 1.89 meters (6-2.25) and climbed into the top 10 on this season’s NCAA Division I chart.

Senior Jirah Sidberry stepped up for NC State in the women’s long jump, delivering a personal best mark of 6.31 meters (20-8.5) to place first in that event.

The Louisville men and Virginia Tech women cling to narrow team leads in the overall scoring. But as is the case most years, the Championships will be settled on Saturday. The three-day event will conclude with finals in eight men’s and women’s running events, in addition to the men’s and women’s shot put, the men’s and women’s triple jump, and the men’s pole vault.

The field events are set to kick off the action at the Norton Healthcare and Learning Center at 11 a.m. Running events begin at noon, with the 4x400 relays closing out the action around 4 p.m.
