CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Lower seeds captured three of the four quarterfinal matches on Sunday in the 2024 ACC Men’s Soccer Championship. No. 5 seed Wake Forest, No. 9 Virginia and No. 11 California prevailed on the road, while No. 2 seed Clemson held serve by winning at home.
Following its 2-0 win at No. 3 seed Duke, California became the lowest seed to reach the ACC semifinals in the 38-year history of the event. The previous low was No. 9. With its 2-0 victory at top-seeded Pitt, Virginia became just the second No. 9 seed to reach the semifinals, joining Louisville in 2023. The semifinal teams’ combined seed total is 27, the highest in tournament, topping the 2023 tournament total of 26.
Wake Forest rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the second half at No. 4 seed SMU to force extra time and prevailed, 5-4, in penalty kicks. The reigning tournament champion, Clemson topped No. 7 Stanford, 1-0, at home to advance to sixth straight ACC semifinal.
The semifinals will be played Thursday, Nov. 14, at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina, with Virginia and Wake Forest squaring off at 5:30 p.m. ET, followed by California playing Clemson at approximately 8 p.m. ET. ACC Network will air both matches. The championship match will be broadcast from WakeMed Soccer Park on ESPNU on Sunday, November 17, at noon ET.
